Green Roofs

The concept of ecological awareness within planted roof design is becoming a reality. The positive effects of a green roof system on the environment are too important to ignore. Green Roofs can be divided into two categories, Intensive and Extensive.

Intensive Green Roofs

Roof gardens designed to provide space for people. They require ongoing management and have some structural implications for the building.

Extensive Green Roofs

Not usually for recreational use and are constructed using low maintenance planting such as sedums or indigenous herbs and grasses. They are lightweight roof systems with minimal structural implications.

The benefits of Green Roofs are:

  • Visually attractive
  • Low maintenance
  • Improved rainwater management with reduced run off
  • Improved building thermal performance with insulation from heat loss in winter and heat gain in the summer
  • Reduction in sound transmission
  • Improved air quality and provision of habitat for wildlife
