Cambridge Assessment, one of the country’s leading examination organisations, has had the 17,500 square metres of its DC10 Warehouse at Whittlesford, Cambridgeshire, completely re-roofed without any disruptions to its highly security-conscious business. The £800,000 contract was managed by Letchworth Roofing who worked closely with Cambridge Assessment’s Architects and Building Surveyors, ATP Group. The existing roof consisted of two different sheeting types, with insufficient insulation, and 1,200 old and fragile rooflights which were a safety hazard in undertaking roof maintenance. Letchworth Roofing installed new Filon single-skin Supasafe rooflights and over-clad the existing sheeting with Kingspan composite panels incorporating Filon factory-assembled doubleskin rooflights. Kingspan Soft Liners with a stucco white aluminium underside were specially produced for this project to take account of the existing roof situation and reduce the weight on the building. The project also involved the raising of the existing smoke vents to the higher roof level and the installation of a comprehensive mansafe system to facilitate safe maintenance. The demands of Cambridge Assessment’s business, storing and distributing highly sensitive exam papers, necessitated Letchworth Roofing operating to the highest levels of security. Letchworth Roofing Technical Director, Peter Dixon-Payne, commented: “The client’s requirement for all work to be undertaken externally to avoid possible breaches of security created challenges within the project that the Letchworth Roofing team had the experience and expertise to meet. Our specification of materials allowed the re-roofed building to both achieve the emissions targets set in the Part 2LA Building Regulations and meet the client’s budget. This project is a prime example of how Letchworth Roofing works closely with clients to provide real value engineering.” |
